Inspected 8 March 2022 · report published 14 April 2022What inspectors found
This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an assessment of Limegrove, a residential care home. The inspection focused on evaluating the safety, effectiveness, caring nature, responsiveness, and leadership of the service. It details the findings of inspectors who visited the home and spoke with residents, staff, and relatives to understand the quality of care provided. The overall aim is to inform families about the home's performance across these critical areas.
On safety, inspectors noted that while residents generally felt safe, there were concerns about inconsistent approaches to risk identification and recording. In some instances, risks such as potential harm from choking or challenging behaviours were not fully documented, and incidents of potential abuse were not always reported as required. Staffing levels were also flagged as a concern, with some staff feeling rushed and rotas showing periods where numbers fell below expected levels, potentially impacting timely care.
In terms of how effective the care is, the service consistently supported residents to achieve good outcomes and maintain a good quality of life. This included thorough pre-admission assessments, the use of recognised monitoring systems for nutrition, and staff who received adequate training and support. Residents were provided with sufficient food and drink, and the environment was well-maintained and homely, supporting residents' needs.
Regarding the caring aspect of the service, residents expressed happiness with their living situation and consistently described staff as kind, caring, and respectful. Inspectors observed these positive interactions and noted that residents were enabled to make choices about their care, maintaining their independence. Staff were knowledgeable about residents' preferences and needs, ensuring person-centred care.
When considering how responsive the service is, inspectors found that while residents' immediate needs were often met, there were areas for development. Residents expressed a desire for more organised activities, and while the manager was working to reinstate these after a COVID-19 outbreak, the current provision was limited. The identification and recording of risks also needed improvement to ensure care was consistently responsive to individual needs.
In relation to how well-led the service is, governance arrangements were not always effective in identifying shortfalls. While a clear structure was in place, some staff did not feel fully supported or valued. The registered manager was aware of the need to improve activities and address issues with risk management and incident reporting. Further work is needed to ensure consistent oversight and improvement across all areas.
