Inspected 24 January 2023 · report published 17 March 2023What inspectors found
This CQC inspection report for Lindau Residential Home assessed the quality of care provided. The report covers five key areas: safety, effectiveness, caring, responsiveness, and leadership. It provides an overview of what was found during the visit, highlighting areas where the home is performing well and areas where improvements are needed. The findings aim to help families understand the home's strengths and areas for development.
On safety, the home has taken steps to address risks such as hot pipes and unsecured tools. However, some fire escape routes were initially obstructed and the need for more detailed risk assessments for individuals, including those with epilepsy or on blood-thinning medication, was noted. Protocols for "as and when required" medicines need further development.
In terms of how effective the care is, while basic assessments are done, they haven't always been comprehensive enough to develop detailed care plans, particularly for individuals with learning disabilities, meaning clear pathways to future goals are not always established. There was also a lack of clarity regarding the implications of Mental Capacity Act assessments and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards in care plans.
Regarding the caring aspect, residents reported feeling treated with dignity and respect, and described staff as kind and caring. Staff demonstrated an understanding of how to protect residents from abuse and worked effectively with other agencies. However, not all staff had received necessary training to meet specific assessed needs, such as for individuals with epilepsy.
On responsiveness, the report noted that some areas of the home were not consistently clean, although immediate action was taken to address this. There was a lack of COVID-19 risk assessments for residents, despite general reassurances on infection control practices. Communication needs, such as directional signage and easy-read information, were not always met for residents with learning disabilities.
In terms of being well-led, the provider's quality monitoring processes had not always identified concerns or led to timely improvements. While feedback from residents and relatives is encouraged and listened to, there were breaches identified in areas such as risk management, person-centred care planning, and governance, indicating a need for enhanced oversight.
