What inspectors found

Longcroft Residential Care Home is a small, intimate care service in Wickford supporting up to seven adults with mental health needs. Based on the recent inspection, residents and their relatives shared overwhelmingly positive feedback about their experiences, describing the atmosphere as happy, safe, and welcoming. People feel respected, valued, and encouraged to live as independently as possible, enjoying personalized routines and hobbies such as keeping pets and cycling. The management and staff team maintain a close-knit, inclusive environment where communication with families remains strong, even when visiting restrictions apply.

When looking at safety, the home has robust systems in place to protect residents from harm and manage risks effectively while still supporting their independence. Staff undergo thorough background checks before starting work, and there is a consistent, familiar team so that residents are rarely cared for by agency workers. Medications are handled properly by trained staff, and thorough infection control measures ensure the premises remain safe and well-prepared for outbreaks.

Care is delivered in an effective manner, supported by a team that receives regular training and supervision to keep their skills sharp. Staff know residents well and actively work alongside external healthcare professionals, such as community mental health specialists and psychiatrists, to coordinate ongoing medical needs.

The caring nature of the staff shines through daily interactions, with residents reporting that workers are always available, kind, and supportive. People are treated with dignity and have genuine control over their lives, whether that means managing their own spaces or participating in daily routines.

In terms of being responsive, care plans are entirely person-centred and adapt to individuals' changing needs, including early warning signs of a mental health relapse. People are actively involved in running the home and sharing their views through regular meetings and surveys.

Finally, the service is well-led by a registered manager who maintains strong oversight through regular audits and a commitment to continuous learning. Although the home faced a serious external incident prior to the inspection which triggered a separate criminal investigation, the current findings demonstrate that internal safety practices, infection controls, and leadership standards remain active and reliable.
