Inspected 19 April 2022 · report published 17 June 2022What inspectors found
This report details an inspection of Mahogany Care Home. It found that the home generally provides a good standard of care, though some areas have been identified for improvement. The inspection focused on safety and leadership, with a particular emphasis on infection control measures. A recent change in management has been positive, bringing renewed staff morale and a proactive approach to addressing existing issues. Overall, the home is committed to monitoring its services and learning from any incidents to ensure the well-being of its residents.
In terms of how safe the care is, residents are protected from avoidable harm. Safeguarding training is up-to-date for staff, and they know how to recognise and report abuse. While most safety checks were in place, including fire safety and equipment servicing, there was a specific issue with the calibration of blood sugar testing equipment which has since been addressed. Medicines are managed safely, but care plans need more detailed information, particularly regarding diabetes management, to ensure accuracy and up-to-date records. Infection control practices are robust, with all necessary measures in place to prevent and manage outbreaks.
Looking at how effective the care is, staff are noted as being caring and patient. Recruitment practices are safe, with all necessary pre-employment checks completed. Staffing levels are maintained appropriately, using agency staff when needed to ensure continuity. However, there was a temporary limitation in activities due to a vacancy, but a new activities coordinator has been recruited.
Regarding how caring the service is, relatives expressed happiness with the home and its staff, describing them as welcoming and transparent. Staff also feel supported and valued, with morale improving under new management.
In relation to how responsive the service is, the home works closely with other health and social care professionals to meet residents' needs. Daily handover meetings ensure effective communication among staff.
Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, a period of inconsistent leadership has been overcome with the appointment of a new, knowledgeable, and proactive registered manager. This new leadership has boosted staff morale and initiated improvements. The management team actively monitors service quality through various audits and is proactive in reporting incidents. A new 'staff surgery' initiative is being introduced to provide a confidential channel for staff concerns, fostering an open culture.
