Inspected 16 May 2023 · report published 8 June 2023What inspectors found
This CQC inspection report for Marion Lauder House offers an overview of the care home's performance across five key areas: safety, effectiveness, caring approach, responsiveness, and leadership. The report details findings from an inspection visit on 27 April 2023, with publication on 09 June 2023. It assesses how well the service meets the needs of its residents, focusing on practical aspects of daily care, staff practices, and overall management.
On safety, while residents generally felt safe and health and safety monitoring was consistent, there were issues with staff recruitment processes, including incomplete history records and inappropriate referees. Some medication records for covert administration required further clarification.
Regarding how effective the care is, residents enjoy a nutritious diet, and the home is fully accessible with plans for refurbishment. However, there were inconsistencies in fluid monitoring records, and a lack of consideration for advocacy support when making important decisions for individuals lacking capacity.
The service's caring aspect was highlighted positively, with residents and relatives consistently describing staff as kind, compassionate, and respectful. Dignified interactions were observed, and staff effectively supported residents, including those experiencing distress.
In terms of responsiveness, residents and their families felt confident raising concerns, and staff were aware of safeguarding procedures. Feedback from professionals was positive, and the management team was perceived as responsive to needs and concerns.
Concerning the leadership and how well-led the service is, a new manager is in post, and there's a clear action plan for improvements. However, gaps in quality monitoring processes were identified, failing to highlight concerns found during the inspection. There's also a need to review the staffing dependency tool and ensure adequate activity provision for residents in the nursing unit.
