This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of May Morning following an unannounced inspection. It assesses the service against key standards of care, focusing on whether it is safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led. The inspection aimed to evaluate the quality of accommodation and personal care provided to residents with learning disabilities, autistic spectrum disorder, and some physical disabilities. Overall, the report highlights areas of significant strength and identifies specific points for further development to ensure the highest standards of care are consistently met.
Regarding safety, the home provides a clean and well-maintained environment where residents are protected from harm, including infection control measures. Risks to individuals are carefully assessed and managed, with staff trained to recognise and respond to abuse. Medicines are administered safely by trained personnel, and there are sufficient numbers of staff to ensure residents' daily needs are met securely.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents’ needs are assessed to ensure they can be met appropriately, and staff receive the necessary induction and training. However, the delivery of the annual staff appraisal system requires improvement, meaning staff haven't had recent opportunities to discuss their development and future training needs.
The service is caring, with staff demonstrating kindness and respect for residents' privacy and dignity. They actively support residents in developing their independence, ensuring their personal information is kept confidential.
On responsiveness, care is personalised to individual needs and wishes, and residents are supported to engage in a variety of preferred activities. The home has an accessible complaints procedure, and staff are proactive in helping residents raise any concerns. End-of-life wishes are also recorded where known.
Finally, the service is well-led, with a supportive registered manager who keeps up-to-date with healthcare changes. Staff feel heard and approachable towards management, and systems are in place to monitor service quality. Feedback from residents and relatives is actively sought and used to improve the service, with the registered manager demonstrating a strong awareness of regulatory compliance.
