Inspected 24 January 2020 · report published 19 March 2020What inspectors found
Richardson Court provides residential care for up to nine individuals with learning disabilities. This report summarises an inspection conducted in January 2020, which assessed the service against CQC's five key questions: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-led. The inspection found that significant improvements had been made since the previous review, addressing previous regulatory breaches. The service aims to support individuals to live full lives, promoting control, choice, and independence within a person-centred framework.
Regarding safety, the home ensures people are protected from harm. Risks are thoroughly assessed and managed, and staff are trained to recognise and report any concerns. Accidents and incidents are analysed to learn from them and prevent recurrence, and there are sufficient staff with good knowledge of the residents' needs. Medicines are handled safely, and staff undergo regular competency checks.
The effectiveness of the care provided is highlighted by the service's adaptation to residents' needs. Following previous issues with the environment, maintenance work has improved the atmosphere, making it warm and homely, though some cosmetic work is still needed. Residents' needs are carefully assessed before admission and continuously reviewed, with decisions made in their best interests and in the least restrictive way possible.
In terms of caring, residents are treated with dignity and respect. Staff communicate kindly and patiently, respecting residents' diversities and individual preferences. Residents are actively encouraged and supported to make their own choices and decisions about their care and daily activities.
The service is responsive to residents' needs, with care plans accurately reflecting these and being implemented consistently. Residents are involved in various activities and outings, and their communication needs are understood and met. The complaints procedure is accessible, and no complaints have been made since the last inspection.
Finally, the service is well-led, with an open and inclusive culture. The registered manager actively seeks feedback for improvement, and staff performance is regularly monitored. Robust auditing systems are in place, and actions are taken to address any identified concerns, ensuring continuous improvement.
