New Copford Place is a purpose-built residential care home providing personal care for up to 27 older adults, including those living with dementia. Located in Colchester, the home features ground-level rooms, pleasant communal spaces, and well-maintained gardens. Following a recent inspection, the service continues to deliver high-quality, person-centred support. Residents and their relatives frequently describe the atmosphere as warm and family-like, praising the dedication of the staff, the quality of the food, and the overall cleanliness of the environment. A new manager has recently taken over and is currently in the process of completing their official registration.
Residents consistently report feeling safe and secure, supported by staff who are well-trained in safeguarding procedures and effective recruitment practices that vet all personnel. However, inspectors noted an issue with medicine stock discrepancies caused by clerical carry-over errors, and observed that one resident experiencing regular falls had not yet been referred to a specialist falls team, though management took immediate corrective action in both instances.
Staff possess the necessary knowledge and skills to meet residents' needs through comprehensive training, supervision, and mentorship initiatives. The home properly applies the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, ensuring that best-interest decisions are made legally and transparently when individuals lack capacity.
The atmosphere is described as calm, relaxed, and genuinely caring, with strong, positive relationships observed between residents, staff, and volunteers. Staff respect individual privacy, knock on doors before entering, and support residents in making daily choices about their routines, clothing, and how they spend their time.
Care plans are detailed and personalised, capturing individual preferences, night-time routines, and life histories to guide daily support effectively. Residents are encouraged to maintain their independence, participate in a variety of activities, and enjoy strong connections with the local community, including unrestricted visiting for family and friends.
Leadership is well-regarded by residents and relatives, and various audits are in place to monitor the quality and safety of the service. While satisfaction surveys and meetings are regularly held to gather feedback, inspectors recommended that senior management broaden their quality audits to more formally include the views of residents, families, friends, and staff.
