Inspected 12 July 2021 · report published 16 September 2021What inspectors found
Oakland House Nursing Home in Manchester provides personal and nursing care for up to 38 adults with enduring mental health needs and complex physical health requirements. The home is divided into three separate units across three floors, with a core purpose of supporting residents to recover, rehabilitate, and build independence. At the time of our review, the service was actively supporting 33 people and maintaining close connections with local healthcare professionals.
When looking at safety, inspectors noted that while medicines, recruitment, and infection control measures—including COVID-19 guidelines and PPE management—were handled properly, there were notable oversights. Environmental risk assessments had not been carried out for communal areas and living spaces, particularly on the ground floor where residents have complex physical needs. Additionally, water temperature checks were inconsistent, with some readings exceeding safety limits before being promptly corrected.
The home excels in creating a compassionate and respectful atmosphere. Residents spoke very warmly of the team, describing staff as caring, pleasant, and attentive. People have built relaxed, positive relationships with caregivers, and individuals are actively involved in daily decisions, personal care planning, and retaining whatever level of personal independence they feel comfortable with.
Support is delivered in a highly tailored manner that respects individual choices, routines, and diverse needs. Staff take their time when assisting residents to ensure no one feels rushed, offering reassurance and personal space whenever necessary. Residents are also encouraged to participate in community life and maintain their preferred daily habits.
On the leadership front, management maintains an open culture and responds to complaints promptly while working well with external healthcare agencies. However, internal quality monitoring checks failed to catch the environmental and water safety issues found during the inspection. Management is actively addressing these oversight gaps to strengthen administrative controls and governance moving forward.
