Inspected 31 August 2022 · report published 30 December 2022What inspectors found
Pemberley House is a nursing and residential care home for up to 72 individuals, including those with physical disabilities or dementia. This inspection report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of the home's performance across five key areas. While some positive aspects were noted, several areas require improvement to ensure the highest standards of care and safety for residents. The report details findings from an unannounced visit in August 2022, aiming to assess the overall quality and safety of the service.
On safety, some aspects of health and safety management were not robust, with concerns around medicine administration, staff recruitment procedures, and the maintenance of the home environment. Specific issues included inconsistent medication records and incomplete pre-employment checks for staff, which posed a risk to residents.
In terms of how effective the care is, the service needs to improve in areas such as ensuring staff have up-to-date training, particularly in clinical skills, and embedding best practices for food textures. The report also highlighted that some aspects of the home's décor were not dementia-friendly, potentially affecting residents' orientation and well-being.
The service was found to be caring. Staff were consistently described as kind, patient, and compassionate, with a good understanding of residents' needs and a proactive approach to managing anxiety. Relatives and residents provided positive feedback on the staff's demeanour and interactions.
Regarding how responsive the service is, improvements are needed in ensuring care plans are consistently person-centred and that activities are sufficiently varied and accessible for all residents, especially those with limited mobility. There were also instances where informed consent for sharing images and videos was not consistently obtained.
Finally, on how well-led the service is, the report identifies a need for more robust quality assurance measures and a review of management culture. Some records were not consistently up to date, and there were indications of a blame culture between management and staff, impacting overall governance. The provider is working on addressing these points.
