This report summarises the findings of an inspection at Rivermede Court, a care home providing personal care for up to 80 older people, including those living with dementia. The inspection focused on safety and leadership following concerns raised, and reviewed previous ratings for other areas. The overall aim was to assess the quality of care and ensure residents are well-supported and protected.
On safety, the home was found to be safe, with residents feeling secure and able to raise concerns. Staff are trained in safeguarding and understand how to report potential abuse, with confidence that management will act on any disclosures. Medicines are administered by competent staff, and good infection control practices maintain a clean environment. Risks to residents' health are well-managed, with clear care plans and appropriate equipment use to ensure their safety. While medication administration instructions are generally clear, some were noted as not sufficiently detailed and an action plan is in place to address this with GP consultation. Staffing levels were generally adequate, though the deployment of staff is to be reviewed to ensure it aligns with resident needs.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents are supported to have maximum choice and control over their lives, with staff always seeking consent and acting in residents' best interests. This is underpinned by policies and systems that promote autonomy.
Regarding caring practices, people and their families reported that residents receive safe care and that staff genuinely care about their well-being. Residents feel comfortable speaking with staff and management, and appreciate the staff's attentiveness and understanding of their individual needs.
On responsiveness, the home ensures residents' needs are met. Feedback from people, families, and staff is actively sought and acted upon, leading to positive changes within the service. Communication with external health and social care professionals is strong, leading to improved outcomes for residents.
Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, management promotes a positive and inclusive culture where residents, families, and staff feel involved and valued. Quality assurance processes are effective, with identified improvements being addressed promptly. The management team is aware of their responsibilities and keeps up-to-date with best practices and regulations, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
