Inspected 20 December 2021 · report published 14 January 2022What inspectors found
Saltmarsh House Residential Care Home provides personal care for up to twelve older people in a single adapted building, accommodating nine residents at the time of our review. Following previous concerns identified during earlier inspections, the provider has successfully implemented an action plan to address past shortfalls. The service now demonstrates meaningful progress across key operational areas, creating a stable, family-style environment where residents and their relatives feel supported by a consistent and approachable staff team.
When looking at safety, residents are protected from avoidable harm through digital care planning and risk assessments that track individual medical needs and environmental hazards such as fire and legionella. Medicines are managed properly by trained staff who keep accurate records and conduct regular competency checks, while staff follow effective infection control standards including proper PPE use and enhanced cleaning. However, the service was only somewhat assured regarding facilitating visits in line with current guidance, and inspectors had to signpost the provider to the latest government rules on visit durations and essential caregivers.
The service operates effectively by maintaining enough staff with the right mix of skills who complete proper background checks like DBS screening before starting work. Staff understand their roles clearly and deliver person-centred care based on up-to-date documentation and continuous learning.
Caring aspects shine through the small, family-run atmosphere and low staff turnover, which allow team members to build close relationships with residents and support positive outcomes like hospital rehabilitation.
Being responsive is demonstrated through strong communication with families via daily contact, emails, and video calls during the pandemic, alongside annual surveys and active collaboration with local healthcare professionals and community nurses.
Finally, the service is well-led through open management and a culture that promotes quality care, transparent reporting, and effective quality monitoring systems that successfully resolved previous regulatory breaches.
