This report details the findings from an unannounced inspection of St Andrews care home, which supports adults with learning disabilities and/or mental health needs. The inspection focused on assessing the quality of care provided across five key areas. Overall, the service was found to be operating well, with staff demonstrating a strong understanding of their roles and responsibilities in ensuring the well-being of residents.
On safety, residents were protected from harm, with robust risk assessments in place and adequate staffing levels to ensure care was provided safely. Medicines were managed effectively, and emergency systems were in place to maintain resident safety.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents received support from skilled and knowledgeable staff who were well-trained and felt supported by management. The service operated in line with the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, and residents were assisted in making choices about their daily lives. Health needs were met through collaboration with healthcare professionals.
Regarding caring practices, residents were supported by staff who knew them exceptionally well and treated them with dignity and respect. Residents' views were actively sought and incorporated into their care decisions, and they were supported in maintaining relationships with family and friends.
The service was responsive to residents' needs, providing person-centred care. Residents were encouraged to participate in employment and leisure activities, and their feedback was used to make positive changes within the home. Complaints were handled appropriately.
Finally, on being well-led, the registered manager was found to have an open and transparent management style. Systems were in place to monitor service quality, and any identified shortfalls were addressed proactively, ensuring continuous improvement.
