CQC ratings by category
Inspected 6 March 2023 · report published 10 June 2023What inspectors found
St Marks Residential Care Home in Clacton-on-Sea provides accommodation and personal care for up to 17 older people, including those with varying levels of dementia. During the recent inspection, families and visitors shared positive feedback about the friendly staff, improvements in food and activities, and a welcoming atmosphere. However, the overall findings highlight that ongoing management and oversight systems need strengthening to ensure consistent quality and safety across all areas.
When looking at safety, the service had mixed results. While relatives felt residents were safe and recruitment procedures had improved, inspectors found gaps in risk management, including unaddressed fire safety door assessments, cold rooms, and unsecured hazardous substances that required immediate intervention.
Care practices showed that staff understood residents' needs and preferences well, but training and skill levels varied. Not all team members felt confident supporting individuals experiencing anxiety without the help of more experienced colleagues, showing a need for better-planned staff development.
On a day-to-day level, relationships between residents and staff were warm and supportive, with new friendships forming organically. Relatives also appreciated the caring approach and noted that staff were generally attentive and quick to respond when help was needed.
Regarding responsiveness, the home had successfully acted on previous recommendations by improving accessibility with clearer fonts on documents and updating complaints procedures. However, care plans and risk assessments still lacked sufficient detail in certain areas, such as clear protocols for as-needed medications.
Finally, the leadership and governance systems require significant improvement. Management relied on being reactive during the inspection rather than independently identifying and resolving risks through their own robust internal checks, pointing to a need for stronger long-term planning and oversight.
