This CQC report details the findings of an inspection at St Peter's Care Home in November 2021. The inspection focused on assessing the safety and leadership of the service following previous concerns. Overall, the report highlights significant improvements in the quality of care provided since the last inspection, with residents and their families expressing positive experiences and confidence in the new management.
On safety, while residents generally feel safe and receive the care they need, there were some instances where risk assessments lacked complete guidance for staff on actions to take if specific risks materialised. However, staff were able to articulate these actions and the manager addressed these points during the inspection. Safeguarding procedures are now robust, with incidents reported and investigated appropriately, and staff are well-trained and vigilant. Recruitment processes have also been strengthened to ensure staff are safely vetted. Medicines are managed and stored safely, with improvements in the recording and administration of "when required" medications, and infection control measures are well-managed and up-to-date.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents are supported with their health needs, and staff know how individuals prefer to receive care. There are sufficient staff available to meet residents' needs, and staffing levels are planned based on individual assessments. Residents are supported to have maximum choice and control, with care provided in their best interests and in the least restrictive way possible.
Regarding caring practices, residents are treated as individuals with their preferred ways of receiving support being well understood by staff. There are enough staff to ensure residents receive personal care and support when needed. Residents' needs are assessed and used to plan staffing levels, and they are supported to have maximum choice and control over their lives.
In terms of being responsive, the service has made improvements since the last inspection, with residents feeling safe and receiving the care they need. The management of medicines has improved, ensuring residents receive their prescribed medications safely and on time. The service also works in partnership with other professionals and the community.
Finally, regarding how well-led the service is, there is a clear vision and an open culture, with a governance framework in place. The newly appointed registered manager is approachable, committed to quality care, and has improved communication and staff morale. Regular audits are conducted, and any shortfalls identified are addressed promptly, demonstrating continuous learning and improvement.
