What inspectors found

Wimbledon House Residential Care Home provides personal care and support for up to 34 adults with mental health needs, with 29 people living at the service during this inspection. Overall, residents and their families feel very happy, valued, and safe living in the home. However, recent findings highlight important areas where management oversight and safety documentation must be strengthened to ensure consistent care standards.

When looking at safety, residents generally felt secure and protected from discrimination, and finances were managed transparently with personal cash kept secure. Staff were recruited safely through thorough background checks and provided consistent support, aided by familiar agency workers when needed. On the other hand, certain risk assessments lacked crucial detail, such as clear instructions for staff on what to do if someone began to choke, and medication protocols for managing constipation needed clearer guidance on timing.

For effectiveness, the home worked well within legal frameworks regarding mental capacity and made proper best-interest decisions with families and healthcare professionals. Residents were successfully supported to maintain their health through close collaboration with GPs, community nurses, and psychiatric teams.

Caring aspects shone through positive relationships, where staff treated individuals equally and respected their diverse religious beliefs, sexualities, and personal identities. Residents enjoyed freedom and autonomy, such as having keys to their rooms, and were actively encouraged to share feedback and suggestions about daily life in the home.

In terms of responsiveness, care plans appropriately tracked complex needs like diabetes management and mental health fluctuations, allowing staff to notice subtle behavioral changes early. Staff were flexible in meeting personal requests, easily adjusting daily schedules to accommodate residents who wanted to go out in the mornings.

Leadership and management required significant improvement due to a lack of day-to-day oversight by the registered manager. Quality assurance checks, audits, and accident logs were not effectively maintained or analyzed to spot recurring trends, and the leadership failed to implement agreed-upon action plans from management reviews.
