This inspection report for Sunnybank House provides an overview of the care provided and its compliance with regulatory standards. The report highlights areas of strength and identifies opportunities for improvement across five key domains: Safety, Effectiveness, Caring, Responsiveness, and Leadership. While many aspects of the service were found to be well-managed, the inspectors noted specific issues that require attention to ensure the highest standards of care are consistently met for all residents.
In terms of safety, while residents generally felt safe and care was delivered kindly, there were instances where staff availability impacted timely responses to needs, particularly with call bells and personal care. Issues were also noted with medicine administration, with some medications being unavailable or out of stock for extended periods. A specific concern was raised regarding the preparation of modified diets, with a recommendation to align with the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) to ensure safety for those with swallowing difficulties.
Regarding effectiveness, the care provided consistently achieved good outcomes for residents, contributing to a good quality of life. Staff received comprehensive induction and a wide range of relevant training, enabling them to effectively support residents with complex needs, including those with dementia and specific health conditions. Assessments were thorough, ensuring residents' needs were met, and collaborative work with external healthcare agencies ensured access to necessary services.
The caring aspect of the service was positively recognised by residents and their families, who described staff as kind and respectful. Residents were supported to maintain their independence and autonomy, with care plans accurately reflecting their preferences and important relationships. Staff consistently sought consent before providing care, demonstrating a person-centred approach.
In relation to responsiveness, residents had access to a variety of activities that enhanced their well-being and engagement. The increased use of permanent staff over agency workers ensured residents received care from familiar faces who understood their needs well. Communication needs were consistently identified and addressed, and complaints were handled appropriately. The service also provided compassionate end-of-life care in collaboration with local healthcare professionals.
Finally, the service was well-led, with the registered manager actively fostering a culture of person-centred care. The manager's visible presence and daily interaction with residents and staff created a supportive environment. Robust quality assurance systems were in place, leading to positive improvements, and residents were encouraged to provide feedback on their care experiences. However, a recommendation was made to develop specific DoLS care plans to better demonstrate how residents' liberty is promoted when under a Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards authorisation.
