Inspected 10 October 2023 · report published 29 June 2024What inspectors found
The Grange Retirement Home provides residential and nursing care for up to 62 individuals, including those living with dementia. This report details the findings from a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), focusing on the safety and leadership of the home. The inspection followed concerns raised about medicine management, nursing care, safeguarding, fire safety, staff knowledge, and staffing levels.
Regarding safety, the inspection identified that residents were not consistently protected from harm. Care plans sometimes contained conflicting information and insufficient guidance for staff on managing risks, and some staff were not fully aware of individual resident needs. The management of medicines was also found to be not always safe, and environmental safety checks, such as fire logs, were not always completed diligently.
In terms of how effective the care is, the report notes that residents are generally supported to have maximum choice and control in their lives, with staff acting in their best interests. Residents and their families generally expressed satisfaction with the care provided and felt safe.
On the caring aspect, the report highlights that residents and their relatives generally confirmed they were happy with the care provided and felt safe. Staff received regular safeguarding training and understood their responsibilities.
In terms of responsiveness, the home allows visitors at any time and supports residents who wish to go out with relatives. There is an accident and incident process in place, although the updates recorded were sometimes generic rather than personalised.
Finally, regarding how well-led the service is, the inspection found that management and leadership were inconsistent. Audits were not always effective in identifying shortfalls, such as outdated medication resources or high agency staff usage not being flagged. There were also issues with the deployment of staff, with a resident requiring 24-hour support being left without their assigned staff member at times.
