This CQC report provides an overview of The Summers, a care home for older people, some of whom live with dementia. The inspection focused on key areas of care, including safety, effectiveness, and the overall running of the home. The report highlights the positive relationships between residents and staff, and the family-like atmosphere within the home. It also details specific areas where improvements have been made or are ongoing.
In terms of safety, the report notes that while staff understood safeguarding and risks were generally well-managed, there were occasions where staffing levels were not sufficient to ensure consistently safe care. However, the provider took immediate action following the inspection to increase staffing and implement new policies for monitoring call systems, which will be reviewed further.
Regarding the effectiveness of care, residents consistently received support that met their needs and preferences. Staff received good training, including specific dementia care, and were supported by management. The home was also adapted to meet residents' needs, and staff adhered to principles of the Mental Capacity Act to protect residents' legal rights.
The care provided was consistently described as caring, with residents and relatives highlighting the kindness and respect shown by staff. Residents felt involved in their care and were supported to express their views. Privacy, dignity, and independence were respected, with staff actively promoting residents' ability to do as much for themselves as possible.
In terms of responsiveness, the service ensured residents' needs were met through good organisation and delivery. There was a good range of daily activities, and care plans were person-centred and regularly updated. The home had a clear complaints policy, and feedback from relatives was largely positive, with many compliments received.
Finally, the service was well-led, with a management team that fostered a positive culture and promoted high-quality, person-centred care. Residents and relatives felt confident approaching the management, and the registered manager was aware of regulatory responsibilities. Regular audits were in place to monitor and assure the quality of care provided.
