The Royal Cambridge Home provides care for up to 30 older people, including those living with dementia. At the time of the inspection, 20 residents were living at the home. The inspection report highlights the positive experiences of residents, who reported feeling safe and well-supported by kind and respectful staff. Families described the home as having a welcoming "family feel." The service is currently not admitting new permanent residents due to pending redevelopment plans.
In terms of safety, the home ensures residents are protected from harm, with robust recruitment processes and effective risk assessments. While staffing levels were generally adequate and call bells were responded to, there was an observation regarding staff deployment during the inspection that the manager agreed to review. Medicines are managed safely, and infection control standards are maintained.
Regarding effectiveness, residents' care outcomes are consistently good, with staff possessing the necessary skills and receiving ongoing training. The home effectively supports residents with their nutrition and hydration needs, and works collaboratively with external healthcare professionals to ensure timely and appropriate medical support. Care plans are based on up-to-date guidance, and residents' needs are regularly assessed.
The service is noted as caring, with staff demonstrating kindness and respect towards residents. Residents and their families are actively involved in care planning, and their choices and preferences are respected. The home fosters a positive environment where residents' spiritual and religious needs are acknowledged and accommodated.
In its responsiveness, the home ensures residents have access to a variety of activities and are supported to maintain community involvement. Feedback from residents and families is actively sought and acted upon, and clear complaint procedures are in place. The home also kept people well-informed about the proposed redevelopment plans.
However, on being well-led, the report indicates that care records were not always complete or up-to-date. While this had not negatively impacted residents' immediate care, it presented a potential risk of inappropriate care if plans did not accurately reflect evolving needs. The provider has been advised on this matter.
