Treloar College

Treloar College is a residential further education specialist service supporting 89 students with physical and other disabilities, including extremely complex needs, across four residential houses. The unannounced inspection by CQC in June 2017 looked closely at residential accommodation, healthcare provision, and overall care outside the curriculum. The service is managed through registered managers in each house, working alongside dedicated nurses, a part-time GP, and integrated multi-disciplinary teams to ensure students receive tailored support.

When it comes to safety, the home protects students effectively through thorough, individual risk assessments designed collaboratively to promote independence rather than impose restrictions, alongside robust staff vetting procedures and secure medication management supported by electronic records.

The effectiveness of the care shines through comprehensive, imaginative staff training that includes bespoke qualifications and practical empathy exercises, paired with strict adherence to legal requirements for consent and mental capacity.

The caring nature of the service is strongly evident in the exceptional use of assistive technology to maximize student independence, deep commitments to equality and diversity, and warm, student-centered relationships between staff and young people.

Being responsive means the college manages transitions into and out of the service exceptionally well, utilizing flexible risk assessments and accessible feedback channels to help every student meet their personal goals and ambitions.
