What inspectors found

Ulcomb House is a small care home providing accommodation and personal care for up to five adults with learning difficulties, with four residents living there at the time of the inspection. The service operates across three floors of an adapted building and focuses on promoting independence, choice, and person-centred support. Following previous areas identified for growth, the home has successfully implemented improvements across its operations to better support its residents.

The service maintains a secure environment where residents feel safe and protected from harm. Comprehensive risk assessments are in place, medicines are managed safely, and staff are well-trained in safeguarding procedures and infection control. Recruitment is thorough, and staffing levels are sufficient to meet individual needs, including one-to-one and two-to-one support in the community.

Significant improvements have been made since the last inspection regarding staff training and the physical environment. Staff now receive regular updates and specialized training, while communal areas have been redecorated with resident involvement, and new carpets have been fitted. Residents have reliable access to healthcare professionals, balanced diets, and support with cooking skills tailored to their future independence.

Staff treat residents with consistent kindness, patience, and compassion, fostering a relaxed and calm atmosphere in the home. Communication is actively supported through customized tools like picture cards and speech applications, ensuring residents can comfortably express their views and feel at ease with the care team.

Care plans are regularly updated and reflect residents' personal goals, likes, and choices. Individuals are fully involved in planning their care, maintaining active lifestyles, and working towards greater independence, including potential future moves to more independent living.

The management team is approachable and supportive, fostering a clear and positive vision for the service. Systems are actively used to monitor quality, record incidents, and learn from mistakes, ensuring the home continues to provide a safe and effective standard of care.
