Westhill Care Home in Caterham provides residential accommodation and personal care for up to nine adults with learning disabilities and autism, supporting eight individuals at the time of our review. Families consistently share that they feel complete peace of mind, describing a warm and inclusive atmosphere where residents lead empowered, independent lives. Relatives appreciate the stable staff team and the approachable management, noting that residents receive attentive, person-centred support tailored to their daily needs and routines.
Safe. Residents and their families feel secure with the staff, and thorough risk assessments, including specific plans for choking prevention and fire safety, are actively followed. Medicines are stored, tracked, and administered properly, and staff undergo rigorous background checks before starting work. However, inspectors identified that the home initially lacked a system to verify COVID-19 vaccination statuses for visiting professionals, though management took immediate corrective action once this was highlighted.
Effective. Care is coordinated closely with external healthcare professionals, such as Speech and Language Therapists and doctors, to ensure medical guidance and mental capacity legislation are strictly followed. Staff receive regular supervision, training in areas like de-escalation, and competency checks, particularly regarding medication administration. Dietary needs and personal preferences are carefully documented and met to maintain residents' health and safety.
Caring. Staff know residents well and interact with them in a genuinely kind, respectful, and dignified manner. Relatives report that individuals are supported to maintain their privacy and human rights while building confidence in the local community. Communication methods are adapted to each person so they can easily express their views and choices.
Responsive. Care plans focus heavily on promoting independence and enabling residents to take control of their daily lives. The home involves relatives closely through regular meetings, phone calls, and surveys, ensuring families are always informed about health updates or changes in care. Staff actively listen to feedback and suggestions from both residents and families to continuously improve the daily experience.
Well-led. The home benefits from a clear management structure, regular internal audits covering safety and infection control, and a positive, open culture. Staff feel valued and supported in their roles, while leadership maintains transparent communication with both families and regulatory bodies. Management is proactive in addressing shortfalls immediately and works well in partnership with local health and social care professionals.
