What inspectors found

Wey View is a care home that provides accommodation and personal care for up to 10 individuals with learning disabilities and/or autism. This recent CQC inspection report highlights specific areas of operation to assess the quality of care and support provided. The findings offer valuable insights for families looking for a suitable care environment for their loved ones.

Regarding safety, the home has maintained a good standard. Staffing levels are sufficient to ensure residents' safety, and the provider's recruitment processes are robust, ensuring that only suitable individuals are employed. Safeguarding procedures are in place, staff are trained to recognise and report abuse, and concerns are investigated and acted upon. Medicines are managed safely, and risk assessments are implemented to protect residents. The home is kept clean and hygienic, with staff trained in infection control.

In terms of how effective the care is, residents are supported to express their needs and wishes through various communication methods, including alternative systems for those who do not use speech. Staff are trained in positive behaviour support and use individual plans to manage emotional reactions, aiming for the least restrictive approach. The service also operates within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, ensuring residents have choice and control.

On the aspect of caring, staff demonstrate good interactions with residents, understanding their individual needs and communication styles. Residents are supported to express themselves, and their communication needs are recorded and planned for. The provider has systems in place to manage challenging behaviours constructively, with guidance for staff from a dedicated team.

However, the service is not always responsive to residents' needs. While some residents are re-engaging in activities and community access, others are not receiving sufficient support for meaningful engagement, impacting their quality of life. Some relatives have raised concerns that commissioned one-to-one support hours are not always dedicated, meaning residents are not receiving the personalised support they are entitled to for activities and community participation.

Concerning leadership and management, the service has experienced changes which have affected consistency. While communication with relatives has improved and the registered manager is actively working on improvements, there are areas for development. Feedback mechanisms are in place, and the manager supports staff well. However, the overall leadership and management practices need further development to ensure high-quality, person-centred care is consistently delivered.
