Woodcot Lodge, a care home providing personal and nursing care for up to 85 individuals, recently underwent an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The report details the findings across five key areas, offering families a comprehensive overview of the service. The home serves individuals needing short-term assessment after hospital discharge before returning home or moving elsewhere. At the time of the inspection, 57 people were residing at Woodcot Lodge.
Regarding safety, care and treatment were planned and delivered to ensure people's well-being. Staff were safely recruited with necessary checks completed, and they received appropriate training. Infection control measures were in place, and the home was generally clean, though some areas were identified for improvement and were part of the manager's development plan. The registered manager demonstrated a strong understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, ensuring people had choice and control, and staff supported them in the least restrictive way.
In terms of how effective the care is, people were supported to eat and drink sufficiently, with referrals made to health professionals when needed. Staff received induction, training, and supervision, with positive feedback from staff regarding development opportunities. The service collaborated with local authorities and health teams for specific staff training. The home's environment was clean and tidy, with adaptations made for accessibility, although a development plan is in place for further environmental improvements.
On how caring the service is, staff interactions were observed to be kind and compassionate. Relatives spoke highly of the care and support their family members received. Staff treated people with kindness, respect, and dignity, promoting positive outcomes and understanding individual backgrounds, needs, and preferences. People were involved in decision-making about their care, and privacy, dignity, and independence were respected.
In terms of responsiveness, care plans were generally in place, though on the first day of inspection, some plans lacked robust information regarding epilepsy and diabetes, which was immediately addressed. By the second day, these plans were more detailed. The service also considered communication needs, with a manager aware of responsibilities to provide information in accessible formats.
Finally, regarding how well-led the service is, the registered manager responded to complaints promptly and had systems to monitor care, reviewing them regularly. The manager understood their responsibilities and had systems to monitor accidents, incidents, and safeguarding, with lessons learned shared with staff. There was a good understanding of their role in the overall management and quality of care provided.
