What inspectors found

Woodcroft is a residential care home that provides personal care and accommodation for up to six people with learning disabilities, supporting five permanent residents and one person who stays regularly for short visits. The home is a single-level bungalow with accessible facilities, and staff generally maintain appropriate medication procedures, use personal protective equipment correctly, and work with external healthcare professionals to support residents' physical health and dietary needs. However, a recent inspection revealed significant shortcomings across all areas of operation, highlighting the need for substantial improvements in how care, safety, and daily oversight are managed.

When it comes to safety, the home did not always protect residents from harm or manage risks effectively. Inspectors identified concerning fire safety plans that suggested keeping people locked in their bedrooms during an emergency, as well as instances of unsafe moving techniques and a failure to follow guidance on preventing pressure sores.

The effectiveness of the service was compromised by failures to properly follow legal frameworks regarding mental capacity and the restriction of personal liberties. Additionally, staff training records showed that some team members had missed essential courses like safeguarding and fire safety, and certain areas of the building required maintenance and redecoration.

Regarding the caring aspect of the service, while some positive interactions were observed, residents were not always treated with dignity or respect. Inspectors noted inappropriate staff remarks about residents, a lack of privacy during personal care, and instances where people were abruptly asked to leave the dining table so staff could hold meetings.

The responsiveness of the home was affected by gaps in personalized care plans, which sometimes lacked crucial information about individual medical diagnoses and support needs. Access to preferred daily activities and personal choices was also limited for some individuals, restricting their overall independence and control over their daily routines.

Finally, the leadership and governance systems within the home were ineffective at identifying and addressing shortfalls. Quality monitoring audits failed to catch crucial safety and medication issues, and serious incidents were not always reported to the relevant authorities as required by regulations.
