What inspectors found

Woodgate provides residential care for up to six individuals with learning disabilities, many of whom have complex communication needs. This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) reflects the findings of an inspection conducted on June 3, 2019. The inspection aimed to assess the quality of care and ensure the service meets regulatory standards. The summary highlights improvements made since the last inspection, particularly in upholding dignity and respect, and outlines the service's performance across key areas of care provision.

On safety, the home has made significant improvements following a period where a resident's challenging behaviour impacted the environment. This individual has now been supported with an alternative placement, and the atmosphere has returned to calm. Robust systems are in place for risk assessment, equipment checks, and emergency preparedness, ensuring residents are kept safe from avoidable harm. Staffing levels are consistently sufficient, and recruitment processes include thorough background checks.

In terms of how effective the care is, residents' physical, social, emotional, cultural, and religious needs are comprehensively assessed and met. Staff receive ongoing training and support, with feedback indicating they possess the necessary skills. The service ensures residents are supported to eat and drink sufficiently, with adapted tools and professional advice readily available. Residents also receive timely access to healthcare services, with detailed hospital passports in place.

Regarding caring practices, there has been a notable improvement since the previous inspection, with residents now consistently treated with dignity and respect. Staff have developed trusting relationships and communicate effectively with residents, often at their level. Family involvement is encouraged, and residents are supported to express their views, with service user meetings utilising visual aids to facilitate participation.

In its responsiveness, the service has improved activity provision to better match residents' preferences and ensure community access. While external professionals provide structured activities, there was an observation that residents sometimes spent long periods watching television. Care plans are detailed, including residents' likes and dislikes, and staff effectively manage communication needs, ensuring information is shared in an understandable way.

Finally, on how well-led the service is, there is a culture of learning and collaboration with other professionals, leading to good outcomes for residents. The management team fosters an open and inclusive environment, and relatives report the service is well-run and would recommend it. While structured supervisions had temporarily been replaced by informal discussions, team meetings and individual supervisions have now been reinstated.
