What inspectors found

Welcome to Mont Calm Residential Home, a care facility located in Maidstone, Kent, registered to accommodate up to 39 older people, many of whom live with dementia. At the time of the unannounced inspection on 8 December 2020, there were 25 residents living at the home. This focused inspection was carried out by the Care Quality Commission specifically to review infection prevention and control measures during the COVID-19 outbreak, following government guidelines and reviewing how the service manages health protection and safety practices.

Regarding safety measures, the home successfully implemented isolation procedures, monitored residents for symptoms, and maintained an up-to-date infection control policy supported by coronavirus-specific protocols. The premises were clean with completed cleaning schedules, and there was an adequate supply of personal protective equipment that staff used and disposed of correctly in line with current guidance.

For effectiveness, the home worked closely with local medical professionals, receiving ongoing support from GPs and district nurses to ensure residents received appropriate care.

When it comes to being caring, the staff maintained consistent health monitoring and professional medical oversight to support residents' well-being during the pandemic restrictions.

In terms of being responsive, the service adapted to changing circumstances by closing to general visitors in line with government guidelines, while having prior procedures like a heated outbuilding, risk assessments, and PPE provisions ready to support safe visiting when permitted. Care plans were updated and medications were reviewed promptly to reflect changing needs.

For leadership and management, the provider demonstrated organization through proper policy implementation, adequate resource management such as PPE supplies, and adherence to social distancing, shielding, and testing requirements for both staff and residents.
