This report details an inspection of Sapphire House, a care home for up to seven individuals with learning disabilities, autistic spectrum disorder, mental health conditions, or complex needs. The inspection examined how safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led the service is, using evidence gathered through observations, staff interviews, and resident feedback. The overall assessment found the home continues to provide a good standard of care, with no serious risks or concerns identified since the previous inspection.
On safety, the home has robust systems to protect residents from harm, with individual risk assessments and detailed guidance for staff. Sufficient, well-trained, and safely recruited staff are available, and medicines are managed correctly. Infection control measures are understood and followed, and essential health and safety checks are completed regularly. Accidents and incidents are meticulously recorded and analysed to prevent future occurrences.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents' needs are thoroughly assessed and reflected in personalised support plans. Staff receive appropriate training, including in positive behaviour support, which has led to significant improvements for some residents. The home ensures residents have adequate nutrition and hydration, with choices offered and dietary needs supported. While the home excels in supporting oral health with regular dental visits, access to secondary dental care can be challenging.
Regarding caring practices, staff are described as caring and respectful, with a good understanding of residents' communication needs and a commitment to promoting independence. Residents are encouraged to participate in all aspects of their lives and care, with their privacy and dignity consistently upheld. Families are kept informed and are welcome to visit at any time, with advocacy services available when needed.
The service demonstrates it is responsive by providing highly personalised care plans that focus on resident outcomes and control over their lives. Residents are actively supported to engage with their communities through various activities, and the home offers a welcoming environment with adapted facilities. Feedback mechanisms are in place, with residents and relatives feeling able to raise concerns and the provider actively seeking their input.
Concerning how well-led the service is, there is now a registered manager in post, supported by a capable management team. Staff understand and embody the home's vision and values, feeling supported by management. A positive, person-centred culture is promoted, with good oversight of quality and safety, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement through audits and feedback.
