Inspected 23 February 2023 · report published 18 March 2023What inspectors found
Woodstock Dementia and Residential Care Home currently provides accommodation and personal care for 41 older individuals, including those living with dementia, across a two-floor setting with communal areas and a secure garden. Based on the recent inspection, families will find a warm, clean environment supported by a friendly, visible management team and consistent staff who know residents well. However, the report highlights important areas requiring closer attention, particularly regarding individual care documentation and medication management, giving families a clear picture of both the home’s strong community feel and the specific operational practices needing ongoing oversight.
When it comes to safety, residents and their families feel secure, and staff are well-trained in recognizing and reporting abuse. The home maintains a clean, odor-free environment with robust infection control measures and sufficient staffing levels, including regular carers and dedicated activity coordinators. However, safety was impacted by gaps in personalized risk assessments, such as missing guidance for choking episodes and laxative monitoring, alongside improper management and documentation of as-required medicines.
Care delivery remains effective as staff support residents to make independent choices and respect legal frameworks regarding mental capacity and least-restrictive practices. Health and social needs are actively monitored through dependency tools, and staff work well in partnership with external healthcare professionals to promote resident well-being.
The caring aspect shines through strong, positive relationships between residents, relatives, and staff. People report that carers are kind, approachable, and familiar with their personal preferences, ensuring residents feel genuinely valued and well looked after in a welcoming atmosphere.
The service is responsive to daily needs by offering plenty of social activities and adapting to feedback through regular surveys from residents, relatives, and staff. The management team acted immediately during the inspection to update care plans and medicine protocols, and plans are underway to introduce a calming sensory room in the dementia unit.
Leadership is approachable, with an open-door policy and supportive daily meetings for staff, alongside a management team that understands its regulatory responsibilities and duty of candour. Nevertheless, internal quality assurance systems failed to catch shortfalls in medication audits and care plan risk management prior to the inspection, indicating that leadership needs to ensure newly implemented improvements become fully embedded in daily routines.
