Inspected 25 February 2021 · report published 11 March 2021What inspectors found
Abbey Grove Residential Home provides accommodation and personal care for up to 19 older people in Eccles, Manchester. The home was inspected in November 2019 and currently supports 16 residents. Families and visitors consistently describe the atmosphere as warm, clean, and welcoming, noting that residents appear well-presented and settled. The management team and staff are approachable, maintaining a positive culture focused on individual wellbeing, though the latest inspection highlighted several administrative and environmental areas requiring prompt attention.
Safety measures are generally well-managed, with secure premises, appropriate equipment, and safe staff recruitment processes in place. However, the inspection noted that certain risk assessments regarding fire safety and legionella were out of date, and records for residents needing thickened drinks for swallowing difficulties were initially missing, though these were addressed immediately during the visit.
Care delivery remains person-centered and effective, supported by trained and knowledgeable staff who coordinate well with external healthcare professionals. Nevertheless, some mental capacity assessments and best interest decisions were not properly completed when residents refused certain aspects of care, and consent documentation contained conflicting information regarding power of attorney.
Residents experience a genuinely compassionate and respectful environment where staff build warm relationships and protect personal dignity. While daily interactions are praised by families, the service would benefit from implementing regular annual care plan reviews to ensure ongoing collaboration with residents and their loved ones.
Care and daily support are tailored well to individual preferences and backgrounds, with good attention given to communication needs, dietary requirements, and maintaining independence. Complaints and concerns are handled appropriately, and residents are supported with sensitivity through their end-of-life care.
Leadership and oversight are generally positive, fostering strong teamwork and a supportive working environment where staff feel valued. However, internal quality assurance and auditing systems need improvement to catch issues like missing risk assessments independently, and the physical environment would benefit from adopting better dementia-friendly design practices.
