Abbey Lodge is a residential care home situated in a detached building near Hythe, accommodating up to 25 older people. During the inspection, 24 residents lived at the service. The overall report highlights a warm, friendly, and welcoming atmosphere where residents feel happy, well-supported, and treated with genuine kindness and respect by staff who know them thoroughly as individuals.
Residents are protected from harm through robust safeguarding processes, well-managed medications, and detailed risk assessments for health conditions like diabetes. The environment is clean, and the manager conducts regular safety checks, including water temperature monitoring. Staffing levels are assessed using a dependency tool, ensuring enough team members are present without delays in support, though some communal areas and parts of the kitchen are scheduled for upcoming renovations and carpet upgrades later in the year.
Care is effective, supported by comprehensive initial assessments and continuous staff training, induction, and competency checks. Residents have positive outcomes, enjoying personalized meals with menu input, and a unique dining room bar setup to encourage hydration. Staff collaborate closely with external healthcare professionals to respond swiftly to any changes in residents' mobility or health needs.
The home offers a genuinely caring and family-like environment where privacy and dignity are carefully upheld. Staff routinely knock on doors, maintain secure digital and physical records, and actively encourage residents to maintain their personal independence while staying close by to assist if needed.
Support is highly responsive to individual needs, utilizing an established electronic care planning system that logs personal preferences, regular monthly reviews, and special memorable moments. Residents participate in arts, crafts, dancing events, and birthday parties, and are aware of the complaints procedure, which has successfully resolved a small number of past concerns.
The service is well-led by an approachable and hands-on registered manager who fosters a positive, transparent culture. Leadership maintains clear regulatory standards, actively gathers feedback through resident and relative meetings, and ensures that required inspection ratings are properly displayed for families to see.
