What inspectors found

Applelea is a warm and welcoming care home supporting up to four adults with learning disabilities and autistic spectrum disorder. The recent inspection highlights a relaxed and engaging atmosphere where residents live as ordinary a life as possible, supported by a visible and dedicated management team. Families and visiting professionals consistently describe the service as friendly and well-run, noting that residents are treated with genuine respect and compassion.

When it comes to safety, the home provides a secure and well-managed environment. Staff are confident in recognizing abuse, and comprehensive risk assessments are in place to manage individual challenges, such as epilepsy or behaviors that may challenge the service, while still maintaining residents' privacy and dignity. Medicines are stored, managed, and administered safely by trained staff, and recruitment procedures are robust. The only point of note for ongoing attention is ensuring all best interest decisions regarding medicines are continually reviewed alongside healthcare campaigns.

The service proves effective through a strong understanding and application of the Mental Capacity Act, with appropriate Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards in place. Staff receive thorough inductions, regular supervisions, and specialized training tailored to individual needs, such as autism and epilepsy awareness. Residents are actively involved in choosing and preparing their own meals using visual menu plans, and the physical environment is well-maintained and adapted to promote independence.

In terms of being caring, residents and their relatives praise the staff for being kind, genuine, and respectful. Staff understand and embrace individual communication methods, including sign language and picture exchange systems, which empowers residents to express their views and make daily choices. Meaningful connections with friends and families are actively maintained, and regular photo updates are sent to relatives to keep them involved in residents' lives.

The home remains highly responsive to individual needs, offering personalized care plans that reflect residents' life histories and important relationships. A clear complaints process is established, and families feel listened to when raising concerns. Staff promote equality, diversity, and human rights, and the registered manager is actively beginning to explore and understand residents' end-of-life wishes and preferences.

Leadership is described as open, positive, and visible, fostering a strong team spirit among staff members. Effective quality assurance processes and internal audits are successfully utilized to drive ongoing service improvements. Furthermore, the management team demonstrates a clear understanding of their legal responsibilities, ensuring transparent communication and sharing of information with external services.
