Inspected 23 August 2023 · report published 14 October 2023What inspectors found
This official report review covers an inspection of a care home providing accommodation and personal care for up to 60 adults, predominantly living with dementia, across two buildings. Inspectors visited the home to evaluate specific aspects of the service following concerns raised about safety, cleanliness, and staffing levels. While the report highlights dedicated staff and some positive relative feedback, it also details a range of ongoing compliance issues and areas requiring urgent attention across multiple operational areas.
When examining safety, inspectors found that risks were not always properly assessed or managed. Issues included incorrect equipment settings, missing medicine protocols, gaps in staff training, and shortfalls in recruitment checks. Additionally, infection control practices fell short, with parts of the home lacking cleanliness and maintenance, resulting in unpleasant odours and concerns from visitors regarding hygiene standards.
Regarding effectiveness, legal frameworks around consent and mental capacity were still not being fully or correctly implemented. Staff support, supervisions, and inductions required further development to align with best practice guidance, and some care plans lacked completeness or contained conflicting information regarding individual needs.
On a more positive note, the home demonstrated a caring approach where residents and relatives generally felt that staff were kind, well-meaning, and approachable. Residents appeared comfortable interacting with staff, and families frequently praised the warmth and compassionate attitude of the care team during daily visits.
For responsiveness, care was not consistently tailored to individual needs, and residents lacked regular access to meaningful activities due to long-term vacancies in the activities coordinator role. Furthermore, some care plans did not fully reflect people's day-to-day preferences or changing healthcare requirements.
Finally, leadership and governance systems faced significant challenges. While local managers were working hard to drive improvements and had planned deep cleaning and training initiatives, their efforts were continually hindered by severe staff shortages across care, housekeeping, and other departments.
