This report summarises the findings of an unannounced inspection of Ashcombe Care Home conducted in May 2018. Following a previous inspection where improvements were required in safety and effectiveness, this visit found that these issues had been addressed. Ashcombe accommodates up to 31 residents, and at the time of inspection, 26 people were living there. The home is a two-storey building with accessible communal areas and a small garden. The inspection covered all key aspects of care provision.
On safety, medicines were managed competently by trained nurses with no gaps in records, and staff recruitment included necessary checks to ensure resident safety. The environment was clean and well-maintained, with regular servicing of equipment and safety systems, including fire drills. Risks were identified and managed, with appropriate equipment available. Staff received comprehensive training and support, and felt confident reporting any concerns.
In terms of how effective the care is, improvements had been made to the environment, including the installation of handrails and clearer signage, benefiting residents' independence. New staff received thorough inductions, and all staff had access to regular supervision and appraisals. Residents’ health needs were well supported through regular assessments and referrals to healthcare professionals when needed. The home operates within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, with proper assessments and authorisations in place. Dining was described as a positive and relaxed experience with plenty of choice.
Regarding caring practices, staff consistently treated residents with kindness, respecting their privacy and dignity, which was evidenced by many positive social interactions observed. Residents and visitors reported feeling well cared for. The service actively involved residents in their care through regular meetings. Visitors were welcomed without restriction, with facilities available for them to enjoy time with their relatives.
The service was responsive to residents' needs, with personalised care plans reviewed regularly. A structured daily activities programme was in place, and residents enjoyed the organised events. A clear complaints procedure was in operation, with lessons learned shared with the staff team. The home also provided end-of-life care with support from local healthcare professionals.
In terms of being well-led, the registered manager was a visible and positive presence, respected by residents, relatives, and staff. A positive and collaborative culture was evident, with staff expressing enjoyment in their work. The service maintained robust quality monitoring processes and strong links with the local community and other agencies.
