This inspection report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) assesses Beckdale House, a residential care home for younger adults with mental health needs, learning disabilities, and/or autism. The report details findings across five key areas, offering a comprehensive view of the service's strengths and areas for development to help families make informed decisions. The inspection highlights that while many aspects of care are positive, there are specific areas requiring attention to ensure consistently high standards.
Regarding safety, the home is working to improve medicine management systems. While people are generally empowered and supported to make choices, and safeguarding procedures are robust, there were some issues with medicine administration recording and storage of controlled drugs that needed addressing. The service does have good risk assessment processes in place and a stable staff team, although one reference check was missed during recruitment. Infection control is well-managed, and people are able to receive visitors freely.
On the effectiveness of care, Beckdale House demonstrates a strong approach. Staff receive good training and support, and the service has made positive changes to reduce restrictive practices. The environment is homely, and efforts are made to personalise spaces, although some door upgrades are still needed to fully enhance dignity. Care plans are generally person-centred, and people are well supported with their dietary needs. Collaboration with external agencies is effective, and the home remains compliant with mental capacity legislation.
The service is also noted for its caring nature. People feel well-supported and treated kindly by the staff, with relatives expressing high satisfaction. Staff are skilled at communicating with individuals, respecting their privacy, dignity, and promoting independence. Opportunities for residents to contribute to daily tasks are present, with potential for further development in this area.
In terms of responsiveness, Beckdale House generally meets people's needs effectively. Care plans are personalised, though there's an opportunity to more consistently capture and update progress on personal goals. Communication needs are well met, with staff demonstrating good awareness of individual requirements. Residents are supported to maintain relationships, pursue interests, and engage in community activities. Feedback mechanisms are in place, and the home is looking to introduce end-of-life care planning.
Finally, concerning leadership and management, there are areas identified for improvement. While the staff team is dedicated and people generally speak positively about the culture, governance and quality assurance systems need to be more robust. Management oversight in certain areas, particularly medicine safety and consistency in leadership, requires strengthening to ensure a consistently high quality of person-centred care.
