Inspected 16 June 2022 · report published 11 August 2022What inspectors found
Bellsgrove Care Home provides residential care and accommodation for up to 15 older adults, including individuals living with dementia. During the recent inspection, the home was fully occupied. Families and residents shared that they felt welcomed by an approachable manager and experienced a warm, friendly, and homely atmosphere supported by kind, respectful staff. While the home demonstrates strengths in daily care routines and positive relationships, inspectors identified several important areas requiring attention to ensure consistent safety and quality.
When looking at safety, inspectors found that certain risks were not always properly assessed, such as the use of bed rails for residents prone to independent movement, and issues regarding the secure storage of cleaning materials and clear access to fire safety equipment. Medication records and procedures also lacked consistency, including missing administration details and unrecorded opening dates for creams. On a positive note, staffing levels were generally viewed as sufficient by families, recruitment processes were thorough, infection control practices were well-managed, and residents felt safe from abuse.
In terms of effectiveness, the physical environment did not adequately support the needs of residents with dementia, lacking distinctive bedroom doors and stimulating destination spaces. Additionally, a referral to a speech and language therapist was not followed up in a timely manner. However, residents enjoyed the food and had good access to healthcare services like GPs and dentists, while staff received appropriate training, followed the Mental Capacity Act correctly, and involved families in best-interest decisions.
The caring aspect of the home was a distinct highlight. Residents and their relatives consistently praised the staff for being respectful, kind, and attentive, and inspectors observed warm, friendly interactions throughout the visit, alongside thorough initial assessments before residents moved in.
Regarding responsiveness, feedback indicated that activities were not always varied enough or suitably engaging for individuals with more advanced dementia, particularly those spending time in their rooms. Staff deployment could also be improved to ensure residents staying in their bedrooms receive more regular engagement.
Finally, leadership and oversight required improvement. Quality assurance processes failed to reliably identify and address necessary service enhancements, and management oversight lacked robustness, leaving the home with repeating compliance issues from previous inspections despite good teamwork among care staff.
