Inspected 30 April 2019 · report published 14 June 2019What inspectors found
This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of The Beeches, a residential care home for older people, some living with dementia. The inspection focused on five key areas: safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness, and leadership. The aim of this summary is to give families a clear, concise understanding of the findings and the quality of care provided at The Beeches, based directly on the inspectors' observations and feedback from residents and their relatives. We highlight what the inspectors found in each area to help you make an informed decision.
On the matter of safety, inspectors noted some concerning issues related to infection control, including the presence of soiled materials and inadequate cleaning in some areas. There were also concerns raised by both residents and staff regarding staffing levels, with a feeling that staff were stretched and residents hesitant to call for help. While recruitment of new staff was found to be safe and safeguarding training was effective, the overall management of risks and ensuring cleanliness needed improvement.
Regarding the effectiveness of care, the home demonstrated positive outcomes for residents, with care plans generally meeting needs. The environment was adapted to be dementia-friendly, and staff possessed the necessary skills and knowledge, supported by comprehensive training and regular supervisions. Residents were supported to maintain a balanced diet, and staff collaborated well with healthcare professionals. Consent for care was obtained lawfully, respecting the Mental Capacity Act.
In terms of caring practices, residents were consistently treated with dignity and respect. Staff were observed to be compassionate, kind, and attentive, building strong relationships with residents and their families. Residents felt well-supported and involved in decisions about their care, with staff offering comfort and reassurance when needed. Equality and diversity were respected, and spiritual needs were catered for.
Concerning responsiveness, while residents and their relatives provided generally positive feedback, there were areas for development. Activities were not always planned based on individual interests, and care plans sometimes lacked specific details on how to support particular needs. Communication methods were not always adapted to meet everyone's needs, and residents sometimes felt there were not enough staff available to assist them promptly.
Finally, on how well-led the service is, the inspection found a lack of clarity regarding overall management on the day of the visit, leading to some mixed views from residents about management visibility. While systems for reporting incidents had improved, there were ongoing issues with infection control and staffing deployment that required further attention from leadership. Feedback mechanisms were in place, and staff felt supported, but a stronger oversight and more consistent implementation of best practices across all areas were needed.
