This CQC report for Berrycroft Manor provides an overview of the service's performance across key areas of care delivery following an inspection in July 2022. The inspection aimed to assess the safety, effectiveness, caring nature, responsiveness, and leadership of the home, with a particular focus on infection prevention and control, medicine safety, and the meeting of residents' needs. While the service demonstrated strengths in certain areas, the report highlights specific concerns that require attention to ensure consistently high standards of care.
On safety, the report indicates that while environmental safety checks were in order and residents generally felt safe, there were significant issues with medicine management and administration. Some records were not always up-to-date, and there were gaps in documentation that meant it couldn't be assured that medicines were always administered correctly and safely, leading to a risk of harm. Care plans and risk assessments also needed improvement to ensure they accurately reflected residents' current needs, such as repositioning requirements.
In terms of how effective the care is, the report finds that residents' needs are generally met through good organisation. Staff were observed to know residents well, and care plans were person-centred, reflecting individual preferences. However, there was a recommendation for the provider to review activity staff provision and ensure meaningful activities are available for residents who spend time in their rooms.
Regarding the caring aspect of the service, residents and their relatives reported feeling safe and well looked after. Staff were described as friendly and always available when needed. The service also worked within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, ensuring people's choices and control over their lives were supported in the least restrictive way possible.
On responsiveness, Berrycroft Manor received positive feedback, with residents' needs being met through good organisation. The home offered a range of activities and involved residents and their families in care planning. Communication needs were also recorded and supported. However, a concern was raised about visiting restrictions that were still in place when there was no outbreak, and the management team agreed to remove this system.
Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, the report identified that systems for oversight were not always effective. Audits had not always identified the concerns found during the inspection, indicating a need for improved governance. While the management team was praised for being helpful, approachable, and quick to address issues during the inspection, processes for ensuring the consistent safety and accuracy of care documentation and medicine management required strengthening to prevent risks to residents.
