What inspectors found

This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of Brightcare following an unannounced inspection. The inspection assessed the service against key standards to ensure the well-being and care of its residents. This visit followed a previous inspection where several areas required improvement, and this report details the significant progress made by the provider in addressing those earlier concerns. The service supports up to six individuals with learning disabilities, offering accommodation and personal care within a chalet bungalow setting.

Regarding how safe the service is, residents receive their medications appropriately and securely, with robust procedures in place. Risks to residents are assessed, and staff are trained to protect individuals while promoting their independence. New staff undergo thorough vetting and induction processes. Although fire safety checks were generally well-managed, the frequency of some checks and the involvement of all staff in fire drills were identified as areas for further development.

In terms of how effective the care is, staff are well-trained and supported, with many holding qualifications in health and social care. They are knowledgeable about the Mental Capacity Act and ensure residents' choices are respected. Care plans are personalised and reflect individual preferences. While staff supervision is generally good, the frequency of these sessions needs to align with the provider's own guidelines. Residents receive a varied diet and appropriate healthcare support, with effective referrals to external professionals when needed.

When considering how caring the service is, staff treat residents with dignity and respect, fostering relaxed and positive relationships. Residents feel heard and that their wishes are acted upon. Staff demonstrate kindness, patience, and genuine understanding of individual needs, often with good humour. Residents report feeling happy and well-supported, with relatives also offering very positive feedback on the staff's compassionate approach and individualised care.

In terms of how responsive the service is, residents are actively involved in planning their care and daily activities, with opportunities to go out and pursue their interests. The service actively seeks feedback from residents and their families, and any concerns raised are addressed promptly. personalised care plans are in place, ensuring routines and preferences are followed.

Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, there is a positive and open culture focused on resident well-being. The registered manager effectively addresses issues as they arise, ensuring smooth operations. Systems are in place for monitoring and improving the service, including regular audits. While records are generally accurate and well-maintained, ensuring all staff participate in fire drills is noted as an area for attention. The provider has successfully addressed previous shortfalls, demonstrating a commitment to ongoing improvement.
