Brook House is a residential care home that provides personal care for up to 36 individuals. During the recent inspection, inspectors noted that while the home has been refurbished to a high standard, improvements were needed in key areas to ensure the well-being of residents. The inspection report provides an overview of the service's performance across five essential categories, offering insights into the daily experiences of those living at Brook House.
Regarding the safety of residents, while people generally felt safe and staff understood how to raise concerns, significant improvements are required. Issues were identified with fire safety management, including a lack of effective procedures during false alarms and concerns with fire doors. There were also challenges with infection control, particularly in the laundry facilities, which did not adequately minimise the risk of cross-contamination. Some residents' personal emergency evacuation plans did not fully account for potential vulnerabilities.
In terms of effectiveness, the care provided did not consistently achieve good outcomes. While staff had received some training, there was a need for enhanced understanding and practical application of dementia care strategies to better support residents experiencing distress. There were also recommendations for more comprehensive staff supervision and for moving and handling training to be more closely aligned with current best practices and individual needs.
The caring aspect of the service was a strong point, with inspectors observing compassionate, kind, and respectful interactions between staff and residents. People felt at ease and comfortable, and positive relationships had been built, with staff taking time to engage and ensure residents felt included and involved in their care and daily choices.
Concerning responsiveness, while residents were supported to have maximum choice and control over their lives, and their nutritional needs were well met with enjoyable home-cooked food, further development is needed. The home needs to address specific areas to ensure all aspects of care are consistently responsive to individual needs and current guidance.
Finally, in relation to how the service is led, while the registered manager fostered a positive and inclusive culture and had good relationships with staff and external stakeholders, improvements are necessary. Provider governance systems require further development to ensure accurate oversight and a consistent plan for improvement. There was also a need to strengthen staff support through a more regular supervision program.
