What inspectors found

Colne House is a residential care home that can accommodate up to 38 older people, including those with mental health needs or dementia. This report summarises findings from a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) which assessed key aspects of the service. The inspection focused on ensuring the home is safe and well-led, and found significant improvements since the previous assessment. Residents and staff expressed positive feedback about the atmosphere and the care provided.

Regarding safety, Colne House has improved its infection control and risk management systems, ensuring a clean and safe environment for residents. While PPE use is generally good, a reminder was given about correct mask fitting. Fire risk assessments are being updated to include risks associated with flammable skin creams. Staff are recruited safely, and staffing levels are monitored to meet residents' needs. Medicines are managed safely, with only a minor issue with oxygen cylinder storage being promptly resolved.

The effectiveness of care at Colne House is demonstrated through staff supporting residents with maximum choice and control in their lives, acting in their best interests and using the least restrictive methods. Residents reported feeling well-supported and safe, with staff actively involved in their care planning. The home ensures residents receive their medicines as prescribed.

In terms of caring practices, residents described staff as "very nice" and highlighted their good sense of humour and affection, contributing to a homely atmosphere. Staff are trained in safeguarding and follow the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, ensuring residents are involved in decision-making.

The responsiveness of the service is shown through flexible and safe visiting arrangements, which residents found to be well-managed. The home also actively engages with residents, visitors, and staff through surveys and meetings to gather feedback and make improvements. Plans are underway to enhance the service by building an extension and providing nursing care.

Finally, the well-led aspect of Colne House has significantly improved. There is strong leadership and a positive culture that prioritises residents. Staff feel listened to and part of a supportive team. The newly promoted manager is well-regarded and effectively supported by senior management. Auditing systems are in place to identify areas for improvement, and the provider demonstrates a commitment to learning and openness. The service works in partnership with health and social care professionals, and is actively involved in the local community.
