Inspected 26 August 2022 · report published 9 December 2022What inspectors found
This report details the findings of a recent inspection at Broome Park Nursing Home. The inspection examined how safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led the service is. While the report notes some positive aspects, it also highlights areas where improvements are needed to ensure residents receive the best possible care. The overall aim of this summary is to provide families with a clear understanding of the inspection's key outcomes.
On safety, the home requires improvement as risks were not always adequately managed, and there were instances where specialist advice regarding food and drink consistency was not consistently followed. Some residents' essential equipment, like pressure-relieving mattresses, were not set correctly, and medication storage temperatures were not always within recommended limits. However, staff received safeguarding training and felt confident in reporting concerns.
In terms of how effective the care is, the service also requires improvement. There were significant delays in meal delivery to one unit, causing distress to residents, though this was attributed to unforeseen circumstances on the inspection day. Communication with external health and social care professionals was often difficult, reportedly due to a high reliance on agency staff.
The report found the caring aspect of the service requires improvement. While some residents felt safe, there were instances where people were not always treated with dignity and respect, and privacy was not consistently maintained. Opportunities for residents and their families to be involved in care planning were limited.
Regarding how responsive the service is, improvements are needed. Care plans were not always personalised to individual needs, and there was a lack of opportunities for residents to set personal goals. Access to meaningful activities was limited for some residents, and end-of-life care planning was not consistently in place.
Finally, the service is noted as requires improvement in how well-led it is. Governance was not effective, leading to risks of poor care. There was a high reliance on agency staff, impacting consistency, and a lack of a registered manager in post at the time of inspection, though the process was underway. Despite these points, staff were recruited safely and received training.
This is an editorial summary intended to make the inspection findings easier to read — it is not a substitute for the full report, and is not medical or care advice.
