This report provides an overview of Canford Manor Nursing Home following an inspection in September 2017. The inspection assessed how safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led the service is. Overall, the findings indicate that residents feel safe and well-cared for, with a focus on individual needs and compassionate staff interaction. Regarding safety, residents expressed feeling secure, and staff are trained to identify and report abuse, effectively managing individual and environmental risks. Arrangements for safe medicine management are in place, ensuring residents receive their prescribed medications on time.

In terms of how effective the care is, residents receive skilled and supported care from well-trained staff who understand how to apply their knowledge. Staff follow legislation to protect residents' rights and freedoms, and residents are supported with their nutritional needs and have access to healthcare professionals when necessary.

On the aspect of caring, staff treat residents with kindness and compassion, building positive relationships and supporting them to maintain important connections. They ensure residents' privacy and dignity are respected while promoting independence and involving them in their care planning.

As for responsiveness, the care provided is highly personalized, centered around each resident's individual needs and regularly reviewed. Residents are empowered to make choices in their lives, and staff promptly address changes in their needs, offering a range of meaningful activities based on individual interests.

Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, residents and their relatives feel confident in the management and describe an open and welcoming culture. Staff are motivated and work well as a team, supported by a robust quality assurance process and positive relationships with external professionals. While the report highlights many positive findings, it does note a need to improve the recording of decisions made on behalf of residents lacking capacity and clarify Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards for staff. Additionally, a clear process for monitoring head injuries after falls was implemented during the inspection, and a system for consistently checking bath temperatures was promptly established.
