What inspectors found

Corbiere is a residential care home for four individuals with learning disabilities or autism. This inspection report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of the service's performance across key areas. The home is designed to promote independence and meaningful lives for its residents. The report highlights the provider's commitment to person-centred care, ensuring that residents can live as fully as possible with control, choice, and independence.

On safety, the home demonstrated strong practices, with staff well-trained in safeguarding and confident in reporting concerns. Risk assessments were thorough and regularly reviewed, and the premises were maintained safely with regular checks. Medicine administration involved two staff members to minimise errors, and the home subscribed to a campaign to reduce over-medication. While recruitment processes were robust and there was minimal reliance on agency staff, the report notes the use of agency staff was necessary to ensure adequate one-to-one support for residents.

In terms of how effective the care is, residents' needs and wishes were assessed and reviewed according to good practice guidelines, with staff actively involving residents in care planning discussions. Staff received regular supervision and training, including induction and shadowing, to ensure they were equipped to support individuals with complex needs. The home supported residents to make healthy food choices and maintain a healthy weight, and had established good working relationships with health and social care professionals. The service was adapted to meet residents' needs, and staff worked within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act.

The caring aspect of the service was highlighted by kind and respectful interactions between staff and residents. Staff had often worked with residents for a long time, fostering positive and affectionate relationships. Support plans addressed individual cultural and religious needs, and staff received training in equality and diversity. Residents were encouraged to express their views and make day-to-day decisions about their care, promoting their dignity and independence.

Regarding how responsive the service is, care plans were clearly person-centred, incorporating residents' likes, dislikes, and how they wished to receive care. Communication needs were met, using a variety of methods including symbols and large print. Residents were supported to develop and maintain relationships, participate in activities, and access the community. The provider demonstrated responsiveness to complaints, engaging with neighbours to resolve issues related to noise, and residents knew how to raise concerns.

Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, the registered manager provided strong leadership, offering effective support to staff and residents. A clear management structure was in place, and senior staff worked collaboratively with care staff. The manager was aware of their responsibilities to CQC and adhered to the duty of candour. The provider had built strong links with health and social care professionals, contributing to positive outcomes for residents. The service’s policies and systems effectively supported a person-centred approach that prioritised resident choice and control.
