What inspectors found

Evelyn May House is a care home that provides personal care for up to 59 residents. This report summarises findings from a recent inspection focused on safety and leadership, following concerns raised about staffing levels. While residents and their families often describe positive experiences, the inspection identified areas where care practices and oversight need improvement to ensure consistent quality and safety for everyone living at the home.

Regarding safety, care plans sometimes lacked the necessary detail for staff to fully support residents, and on occasion, information within these plans was not consistently followed, posing potential risks. For instance, a resident at high risk of falls was observed without appropriate footwear or their walking aid. Oral hygiene care also required attention, with dental supplies in poor condition, though the manager has since introduced a new system to address this. While safeguarding referrals to the local authority are now being managed, and medication administration is safe, improvements are needed in recording turning schedules for pressure sore prevention and in the completion of distress behaviour documentation. Infection control measures were found to be robust.

In terms of how effective the care is, the report notes that while residents and families generally report positive experiences and appreciate the staff, there are specific areas requiring attention. For example, documentation in care plans sometimes lacked the detailed, person-centred information needed to support individuals effectively, particularly concerning distressed behaviour and certain healthcare needs. The manager was receptive to feedback and began implementing new processes immediately.

When it comes to caring, residents and their relatives mostly reported positive interactions. One relative described the staff as "amazing, so happy and patient in their work," and a resident mentioned enjoying their time with friends. However, the inspection also highlighted that the busy nature of staff sometimes meant less time for social interaction, and some residents felt they might be "forgotten" if left alone.

Regarding responsiveness, the home is working to ensure that care plans are regularly reviewed to accurately reflect current resident needs. The manager is actively engaged in this process, which is planned to continue over the coming weeks. Feedback mechanisms are in place, with meetings allowing residents and relatives to share concerns and receive updates.

On the aspect of leadership, the service is under new management, with the manager in the process of registering with the CQC. This new leadership has been proactive in reviewing the service, identifying areas for development, and implementing improvements, including reintroducing staff supervision and enhancing training. The manager has demonstrated an understanding of their duty to be open and honest when things go wrong, and communication with relatives is generally viewed positively. While progress is being made, further development is needed in ensuring consistent oversight and in refining systems to fully support the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care.
