Falcon Lodge is a residential care home supporting up to five individuals with learning disabilities and/or autism. The home is situated in a domestic-style house designed to resemble other properties on the street, with individual bedrooms and communal spaces, including a garden. This report summarises the findings of a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
On safety, the home effectively safeguards residents, with staff knowledgeable about abuse prevention and reporting. Risks are thoroughly assessed and managed, and a focus on enabling residents to take positive risks, such as using public transport, enhances their quality of life. Staff are safely recruited, and medicines are managed securely with appropriate training and checks. A minor concern was noted regarding lifting flooring in two bathrooms which could be difficult to clean, and the kitchen was showing signs of wear, though a refurbishment was planned.
In terms of how effective the care is, assessments and care plans are comprehensive and person-centred, particularly considering the needs of individuals with autism, including sensory considerations. Staff receive extensive training and regular supervision, feeling well-prepared for their roles. Residents are supported to maintain a balanced diet with options catering to individual preferences, and healthcare needs are proactively managed through access to professionals, with GPs and nurses sometimes attending the service. While the home is well-adapted, its external appearance does not indicate it as a specialist care provider.
The service demonstrates caring practices by treating residents with dignity and respect. Staff build positive relationships, and feedback from relatives is consistently positive, describing staff as kind and the atmosphere as happy. Residents are actively involved in their care and support, with efforts made to promote their independence and choice in the least restrictive way possible. The home has achieved accredited status from the National Autistic Society, reflecting a commitment to best practices.
Regarding responsiveness, the service excels at adapting to changing individual needs. In-depth profiles and sensory assessments help to identify and address specific requirements, with staff skilled in communicating effectively with residents. Activities are person-centred, encouraging community access and the development of new skills. The home fosters a sense of family through organised events for residents and their relatives. While a complaints procedure is available, relatives have not needed to use it.
Finally, on leadership, the service is well-led with a clear, person-centred vision. The registered manager is dedicated to empowering residents' independence and well-being. Staff are committed to this vision, and a positive culture is evident. The service proactively seeks feedback from residents, relatives, and staff, using this information for continuous improvement. A significant achievement highlighted is the home's accreditation from the National Autistic Society.
