Inspected 16 June 2023 · report published 30 September 2023What inspectors found
Snowdrop Place Care Home in Hedge End accommodates up to 68 older people and those living with dementia across a purpose-built environment featuring modern amenities like a cinema, salon, and garden views. While families and residents appreciate the warm atmosphere and generally supportive environment, a recent inspection highlighted several important areas requiring operational improvements to ensure consistently high standards of care and organization.
When it comes to safety, risk management plans and medication instructions were sometimes incomplete or inconsistent, particularly regarding variable doses and hydration tracking. Furthermore, both staff and residents expressed concerns about staffing levels affecting response times, and staff recruitment files occasionally lacked complete employment history checks.
The effectiveness of the service was impacted by environmental design elements, such as signage and bathroom layouts that did not fully support residents with dementia or physical disabilities in moving around independently. Additionally, while dietary support was available, some residents felt the meal choices and food quality lacked sufficient variety and personal preference.
On a more positive note, the care provided was found to be genuinely kind, compassionate, and respectful of personal dignity. Staff actively promoted independence where possible and ensured residents were treated as individuals.
The service was also responsive to people's needs, maintaining person-centred care records that captured personal histories and preferences. Residents benefited from dedicated activity coordinators who provided a varied schedule of events and entertainment.
Finally, leadership and governance systems required strengthening, as internal auditing procedures failed to catch the record-keeping inconsistencies and care plan gaps identified during the inspection. The provider is actively working on action plans to address these administrative and environmental shortcomings.
