Inspected 17 October 2023 · report published 9 December 2023What inspectors found
Greatwood House is a residential care home that currently provides personal care and support to 52 older people, individuals with younger adult needs, and people living with dementia. Based on the recent inspection, residents and visitors generally experience a welcoming, clean, and secure environment where staff know individuals well and manage daily operations effectively. While the service demonstrates strong fundamentals and positive day-to-day care, the report highlights a few important administrative and environmental areas requiring attention.
In the areas of safety and daily operations, residents feel secure, and the home maintains proper health checks, cleanliness, and reliable medication management. However, inspectors noted that staff recruitment files did not always include previous employment references from last health and social care employers.
For the effective delivery of support, staff complete proper training, manage balanced diets well, and work closely with external healthcare professionals like community nursing teams. On the downside, the home lacked sufficient dementia-friendly signage around the premises, though management is already consulting with an expert to improve this.
Regarding person-centred care and compassion, staff treat residents with genuine kindness, respect their choices, and actively encourage independence in mobility and eating. However, records did not consistently demonstrate that residents and their families were involved in reviews of their care plans.
When responding to individual needs, the home offers a diverse range of activities, including virtual reality sessions and visits from local schools and entertainers, alongside proper complaint handling. Nevertheless, some specific care plans lacked sufficient detailed guidance for certain situations, such as managing distressed behavior, even though staff members on the floor clearly knew how to support individuals correctly.
Finally, in terms of leadership and management, the service is well-managed with an open culture where residents and staff feel comfortable raising concerns with the registered manager. Management actively reviews incidents and engages with the community, though staff noted that meeting feedback does not always drive sustainable changes, and staff previously spent excessive time completing repetitive paperwork which has since been streamlined.
