What inspectors found

This report summarizes an inspection of Jameson House, a residential care home providing support for up to five individuals with learning disabilities and/or autistic spectrum disorder. The inspection, conducted over two days, assessed how well the service meets the needs of its residents across five key areas. The report highlights the dedication of the staff and management in fostering a supportive environment, emphasising personalised care and the promotion of independence. It details the systems in place to ensure the safety and well-being of residents, the effectiveness of care provision, and the caring nature of staff interactions. The responsiveness to individual needs and the overall leadership of the service were also key focuses of this evaluation.

In terms of safety, the home has robust systems for assessing staffing levels, ensuring enough skilled staff are available. Thorough recruitment checks are consistently carried out before staff begin working. Risks to residents have been assessed and managed effectively through detailed plans, covering areas like community access and medication. While most medication administration was accurate, a minor discrepancy in stock records was identified and immediately addressed. Necessary maintenance, such as carpet replacement on stairs and kitchen worktop refurbishment, has been identified and an action plan is in place.

Regarding effectiveness, staff possess the necessary skills, experience, and support to meet resident needs, with a strong emphasis on comprehensive induction and ongoing training. The service operates effectively within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, ensuring residents' rights and freedoms are protected. Assessments are in place to understand residents' capacity for daily decisions, and choices are actively offered, with relatives kept well-informed about care and welfare. Residents receive support tailored to their nutritional and health needs, with good access to external healthcare professionals.

The caring aspect of the service is evident in the calm and considerate interactions staff have with residents, even in challenging situations. Staff demonstrate a deep understanding of individual needs, including non-verbal communication, and respond with kindness and compassion. Residents appear comfortable and content, with staff actively affirming and praising their achievements, positively impacting their sense of well-being. Relatives consistently praise the staff's dedication and the respectful way they support residents, noting that residents are happy to return after visits.

In terms of responsiveness, the care provided is personalised and adapts to residents' assessed needs and preferences. Assessments conducted before admission are used to create detailed care plans that guide staff in meeting individual health, welfare, and safety needs. Staff work closely with residents and their families to understand preferences and ensure care is delivered as desired. Residents are encouraged towards independence, and care plans are regularly reviewed to reflect current needs, with daily records ensuring seamless handover between shifts.

On leadership, the service is managed with clear aims and objectives focused on personalised care, independence, choice, rights, and empowerment, with these values actively embedded in practice. There's an open culture where staff feel comfortable providing feedback, and the registered manager is a visible presence conducting quality and safety audits. The management team actively seeks to involve residents in day-to-day decisions and the running of the service, finding innovative ways to include those with limited verbal communication.
